COP 27’s importance to Africa

COP 27’s importance to Africa

COP 27, also known as the Conference of the Parties, is an annual event where member nations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meet to discuss and negotiate climate change mitigation, adaptation, and finance.

This year, COP 27 is being held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from November 6-18, 2022.

COP 27 is important for Sub-Saharan Africa for many reasons.

🌎First, Africa is highly vulnerable to climate change. In recent years, we have seen an increase in extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and heat waves, which have had a devastating impact on livelihoods and economies.

🌎Second, Sub-Saharan Africa is a key player in the global effort to combat climate change. The region is home to some of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, such as Nigeria and South Africa.

🌎Third, COP 27 is an opportunity for Sub-Saharan African nations to showcase their climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. For example, Kenya is leading the way in the use of renewable energy, while Ethiopia has been working to restore its degraded forests.

🌎Fourth, COP 27 provides a chance for Sub-Saharan African countries to build capacity and ensure that their voices are heard in the global climate change discussion.

In conclusion, COP 27 is a crucial event for Sub-Saharan Africa. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about the continent’s vulnerabilities to climate change, showcase its mitigation and adaptation efforts, and build capacity for the future.

Earth Day & Climate Change

Earth Day & Climate Change

Today (April 22nd) is Earth Day & is a great opportunity to think about your impact on the environment. Many people would like to reduce their carbon footprint but don’t know where to start.

Here are some great tips to start:

🌍Consider alternatives to flying. The carbon footprint of flying is higher than other forms of transportation such as driving or taking the train. If possible, try traveling by car or train instead of flying. Riding a bicycle is an exceptionally eco-friendly mode of transportation for short distances (up to 20 miles).

🌍Drive more fuel-efficient or electric vehicles. If you choose between two cars, choose the one that gets better gas mileage and has lower emissions. Look up your current car’s MPG (miles per gallon) and compare it with similar new models on sites such as Fueleconomy.gov to see if it may be time for an upgrade!

🌍Switch to earth-friendly products: Think about the categories you buy most often, like groceries and cleaning products, and try to choose earth-friendly options.

🌍Switch to energy-saving options: Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs can save you money and help the planet.

🌍Recycle, recycle, recycle: Make a plan to recycle more than before. To maximize your impact, make it a priority to recycle everything you can throughout the year.

🌍Use less H20: Use less water by turning off taps when not using it, installing a low-flow showerhead, taking shorter showers, installing a low-flow toilet & fix any leaks in your home.

🌍Get Composting: Try composting for food scraps and yard waste in your backyard or at local composting sites. Composting creates rich soil and adds nutrients to plants, trees, bushes, and gardens.

You can take action on Earth Day by working at home or with your communities. Reducing your plastic waste at home is a simple way to take action by choosing reusable glass and metal containers instead of plastic ones. You can also help remove excess waste from your local landfill by participating in community clean-up projects. Educating others is another crucial step in combating climate change. Volunteering at a local school or community center will impact future generations. If you are passionate about this topic, encourage others to join the discussion about what we can do as individuals to prevent further damage to our planet!

Happy #EarthDay2022!🌍

The negative impacts of climate change are likely to fall disproportionately on countries in the Global South. The frontline will be in developing countries and it will be up to climate champions, like Mayor Aki Sawyerr from Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa to develop innovative solutions to these climate challenges. Sign up here to join this free pre-COP26 event on 27/10/21 at 10 am BST (chaired by the CDC Group) to understand how Mayor Aki’s administration is combating climate change in Sierra Leone.
